The financial markets is one big casino. You don’t see the strip in Las Vegas littered with bodies of losers who blew their life savings for the umpteenth time. You pick yourself up, get sober and a shave, reorganize and scrounge for ammo to once again throw all at the roulette table. You roll with the dice, the punches, and the women, that’s the way to do it.

If rockers in dire straits can croon “Money for Nuthin’ and Your Chicks for Free”, why be a kill joy and kill yourself and maybe those around you for nothing? Even Mr. Las Vegas, the great Wayne Newton filed for bankruptcy not many years ago. Now he’s back on track facing yet another IRS claim in the millions with a new young lady by his side.

The crisis of 2009 marks a milestone. It pushed two billionaires, one from Germany and another from France to commit suicide after they lost their fortunes and their rankings in the Forbes list. At least our American billionaire from Wall Street who siphoned their earthy treasures in an elaborate scam has the gall to plead with the investigators to allow him to keep multi millions to defray the cost of living beyond his eighty years.

How about us, practical try hard paupers who exhausted all possibilities but can’t seem to break into the magic circle of the Forbes 400? Do you suggest that it’s about time we took our lives as well? Staying alive in fact over the ravages of hunger and disease is our daily concern which keeps us on our toes. That doesn’t allow us much quietude to contemplate ending it all. Fighting for your life squeezes out all the creative juices and makes the going fun in an underhanded sort of way.

Is your life valued much less because you have decided to ditch it at this point where you have not yet ascended to the pinnacle of your potential? The investment portfolio that vanished in thin air pales in comparison to the net worth of the ill fated tycoons in the billions. Are you going to give up your life for a much cheaper price? Are you too spent to try again and rustle up the old spunk and energy? Aren’t you a better guy now because of all the experiences in your resume, failed or not? You my friend are a lean mean corporate machine. Move over, Mr. Geithner!

God has strange ways of giving gifts. I am a writer now because I failed as a businessman and a travel agent.

I have always wanted to write. My father wanted me to be a lawyer like him but I failed in the attempt to follow his footsteps. My father was so disappointed because he said that being a good writer was a plus factor in writing legal briefs which would have served me in good stead as a successful lawyer. There was a time he showed my work to his law partner. I guess it passed muster because I got a blanket offer from the firm to join them upon graduation from law school.

God had other plans for me.

Baby boomers abound everywhere I turn. A lot of them are displaced and walk around like lost souls. A lot of them are pretty comfortable in retirement. They drive around in decent cars and bask in the easy pace. Most of their concerns dovetail with the gradual deterioration of various parts of the obsolescing human anatomy.

Looking for a meaning beyond religion is something out of reach for most. Cutting it in different professions did not leave them with recognition or reputations to outlive their life spans. In my case I have relative popularity in the Internet. About 6,000 people come back regularly to browse my stuff. I feel so proud when I type my name on Google search and my writings show up to fill up a whole page in the natural rankings. My memory is secure in cyberspace. It is a precious gift from God that had to be cloaked in debacles from my past when it came.

Just like the gloom I felt when the coming of my granddaughter Sophie Lina was so inauspiciously broken to me by my one and only daughter Lesley. I thought my whole world had fallen apart because everything I dreamed and labored for disintegrated in the acrimonious reality of a baby born out of wedlock. The shame and the recrimination invaded my whole person like the Angel of death of the Passover that snaked like a cloud thru the alleyways of God forsaken Egypt.

You know what; I've never known more joy in my life than the happiness that my granddaughter Sophie Lina beams to me now in my golden years. I know not one minute of depression because she has such thespian radiance and aplomb when at the prodigious age of three she can launch in song and dance in front of the TV to keep pace with the gyrations and singing heights of High School Musical.

I still can't believe that I can say with all magnanimity that I'm so lucky that my daughter has not yet decided to tie the knot with the father of my precocious bundle of joy and will probably wait two more years until their earnings stabilize to afford living as one Christian family under a roof of their own. In the meantime, I get to keep my granddaughter Sophie to have and to hold till I depart for heaven unknown.

Sophie is God's gift for the remaining stretch of my otherwise depressing aging which He has taken fit to color with such bounciness, brightness, and warmth. All in the name of love and caring; thanks be to the One and Only Holy Almighty God the Father.

God’s gifts come in strange costumes. Sometimes tattered rags cover precious treasures underneath.

In the same way He blights America with a financial crisis but pulls out a Barack Obama from the proverbial hat to engender a renewal of spirit for a nation gone berserk with consumerism and pursuit of money.

In the same way He bids an airliner to beach on the frigid waters of the Hudson only to pull out a 57 year old unnoticed and unsung hero in Capt. Chesley Sullenberger and crowns him with renown not only for the heroism of the hour but for the unswerving dedication he put into a lifelong career of adhering to American ideals.

Signs of the times and signals from God.

America will be back in the high life again but this time with a vision and an inspiration totally divorced from wastrel consumption and once more back on track to follow a noble destiny to lead the world to a better place in the sun
