Second

Life’s tribulations are cataclysmic explosions in the rapture of Creation

They snake and coil in borderless form like paintballs splashing blank walls

All religions belong to You as long as they give You glory

All men’s love You take to heart and accept as Your only dowry

Parallel dimensions of reality and existence grant the equilibrium

Human brains are not equipped to grasp the complexity of Your dominion

The poor and the sick are alive and well in theaters of opposing mirrors

Yellow and the black become blonds with blue eyes exchanging roles

You hear them when they bow before Allah and worship Your Name

Your Divine Heart warms when they honor Yahweh just the same

The Catholics will go to heaven and see Your Son seated on Your Right

Mary Your Queen of Heaven is given them because of their heart's desire

Jason Burke instantly knew Bader was wearing a Kevlar. The steel jacket slugs would have pierced right through and not toss him back with velocity. He strained to get up watching the entrance cautiously. He motioned to Ellebana in front of him to stay down. She sat there her skirt pulled up to reveal the edges of her leggings. Her mouth was agape to see him alive and do battles for them like a knight from Camelot’s glory.

He stood righting the edges with caution like a vision of God’s soldier from the long annals dating back from King Arthur to Generals’ General MacArthur. He whirled quickly and gave the keep back signal to Marita who propped her aim on the edge of the bed. Yna and Angela watched speechless from the floor to see him cast a long shadow. Mike remembered him in dream visions of God’s avenging angel tasked to enforce His Word.

Mike darted to the corpse by the door and snatched the abandoned Belgian automatic. Jason tackled him forward as he stepped out to draw two successive rounds from Bader rolling on the corridor. The two entangled forms crashed against the wall then fell to the floor. Jason slid free and pumped two shots in Bader’s direction who had anticipated it and rolled unharmed to the opposite side of the corridor.

Screams punctured the smoke of the besieged hallways as submachine gun fire filled the corridor from the direction of the lobby. Jason pressed down hard at Mike who was benumbed by the impact and his old injuries. It was like Afghanistan again in the din of a savage firefight. Jason Burke made ready and clipped on a new magazine. He threw Richard’s electronic smart flare to blind everyone all around.

This threw off Ellebana’s aim as she fired at Bader from the behind the door sill. Marita tucked her sidearm and embraced both Angela and Yna prostrated on the floor. The mangled face of the nurse made all three reel with grief. Lassel was sobbing out of control and was frozen in her tracks to run after Mike in the hallway by the blinding flash. Ellebana slid down to a squat rubbing her eyes and pressed her head against the safety of the door. She extended her right outside the door and kept firing to ward off the submachine gunner and keep Bader preoccupied.

Bader’s rear guard made out Bader’s slithering form and helped him up to escape in the direction of the stairway. As the two limped down the stairway they were accosted by the security guard and ordered to halt. He didn’t stand one ghost of a chance with his paltry revolver. The pair pumped him full of holes to go spin wheeling down the steps. Their flight across the cavernous main lobby remained unchallenged. The two figures darted in a flash like ice hockey swingmen skating over the white marble surface.

Jason Burke rose over the pain on his shoulder and cut to the chase. Pain has two ways to affect your person. It can keep you down or fire you up. Jason made it a way of life to switch from one to the other with steely determination. Right now he put the pain in the recesses of his consciousness and focused on running like a gazelle in the playing fields of hometown Indiana. The automatic HK .9MM hang ready on his side to draw up quickly in case of confrontation. He flipped on the 3G to get GPS signals from Richard with his omniscient eye in the sky.

Ellebana dogged his trail to give him cover from behind. He turned a few times to ward her off to no avail. The heat of the pursuit didn’t give him time to argue. Into the streets under the Light Rail Transit they ran. The throng parted in confusion and glee as they went. The glee turned to horror when they saw the guns.
